Kiwis maybe small in size, but don’t let its size fool you. This super healthy and nutritious fruit provides many benefits.
Let’s find out all about it. Below are 6 Healthy Reasons to Eat Kiwi Everyday!
1. Beautiful Skin
Kiwis contain vitamin C which helps support the skin’s collagen. Vitamin C is an important nutrient that works in the body as an antioxidant to help prevent damage caused by pollution and the sun. It helps smooth wrinkles and improve overall skin texture.
2. Eye Health
Kiwi contains the phytochemical lutein. Lutein is a carotenoid vitamin that can help prevent age-related blindness. It can also protect the eyes from different kinds of free radical damage. Because the body cannot synthesize the lutein needed for health, it is important to get plenty of foods that contain lutein, such as kiwi.
3. Lowers Blood Pressure
Kiwis have high potassium content, which help negate the effects of sodium in the body. A low potassium intake is a big risk factor in developing high blood pressure, as a high sodium intake.
As per the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, fewer than 2% of US adults meet the daily requirement of 4,700 mg recommendation for potassium. A high potassium intake is also associated with a 20% decreased risk of dying from all causes.
4. Heart Health
Kiwi contains potassium and fiber which support heart health. An increase in potassium consumption, along with a decrease in sodium intake, is the most essential dietary change that an individual can make to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.
High potassium intakes are also associated with a reduced risk of stroke, protection against loss of muscle mass, preservation of bone mineral density and reduction in the formation of kidney stones.3
5. Prevents Constipation
Some studies have reported that the kiwi may have a mild laxative effect and can be used as a dietary supplement especially for elderly individuals having constipation. Adding kiwi fruit into your daily diet, was shown to promote softer and more frequent stool production.
6. Protection Against Asthma
Studies have shown that eating vitamin C-rich fruit such as kiwi may provide a significant effect against respiratory symptoms, associated with wheezing and asthma.
A study published in Thorax, showed over 18,000 children, whose ages range from 6-7 years, found that those consuming the most citrus and kiwifruit (at least 5-7 servings per week), had 44% less incidence of wheezing, as compared to children comsuming the least or less than once per week.
Severe wheezing was reduced by 41%, shortness of breath by 32%, runny nose by 28%, night time cough by 27% and chronic cough by 25%. Children who had asthma when the study began, were shown to benefit the most, and protective effects were most evident even among children who consumed fruit only once or twice per week.
