Most conventional mouthwashes are full of chemicals. But did you know that you can use aloe vera instead, which provides a better solution. That is minus the chemical side effects.
Conventional mouthwashes contain some unhealthy stuff. From artificial sweeteners to alcohol and synthetic colors, mouthwash can be really unhealthy.
One of the worst ingredients in some mouthwashes is chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine is an antibacterial ingredient that kills bacteria in the mouth, that is both the good bacteria and the bad bacteria.
Chlorhexidine can beat plaque due to its antibacterial qualities. But it also has a number of side effects. This includes redness, oral rashes, burning, blistering, swelling, general irritation and staining of the teeth.
Aloe vera is considered to be a natural anti-bacterial mouthwash. This beneficial plant has many medicinal properties, including benefits for the skin, wound repair and other gastrointestinal benefits. It also helps improve the health of the mucosal membranes and repel inefective bacteria yet support friendly bacteria.
Aloe Vera and Plaque
Aloe Vera fights plaque by helping the digestive system in absorbing more nutrients and helps in the assimilation of these nutrients. This in turn, promotes healthy teeth, which helps in reducing the risk of plaque and tooth decay.
Aloe Vera and Gingivitis
Gingivitis and periodontal disease can increase the risks of developing strokes, heart disease, lung infection and diabetes. The Center for Disease Control and Emory University have conducted studies on this issue and have proven that those with gum disease have a higher mortality rate, as compared to those who do not have gum disease. This is because of the harmful oral bacteria that invades the arteries and veins, which causes inflammationa and arterial plaque build-up.
The use of aloe vera as mouthwash to help figt plaque and periodontal disease Proven is proven by research. Researchers from India’s KD Dental College and Pradesh’s Department of Public Health Dentistry, conducted a study regarding the use of aloe vera in a clinical setting.
The research involded the study of 300 healthy people. Three groups were made and the first group of 100 used a 100% pure aloe vera juice as a mouthwash. The second group of 100 people, used chlorhexidine mouthwash and the last group of 100 people rinsed with saline water. Each of the groups rinsed twice per day with their respective mouthwashes.
The groups were then tested for plaque and gingival index, before and after the testing period.
The results showed that using the aloe vera mouthwash reduced plaque as effectively as chlorhexidine. Both of these groups had significantly reduced plaque as compared to the control group.
The results of the research have indicated that Aloe Vera may prove to be an effective mouthwash due to its ability to reduce dental plaque.
Added to that is that Aloe Vera also reduces periodontal diseases. It helps improve the health of the gums, oral cavity and teeth. This was proven by a separate research from India’s Teerthankar Mahaveer Dental College and Research Center conducted in 2014.
