Some of the most effective skincare products that are currently on the market feature not futuristic formulas, but, medically-proven, natural ingredients that have been used in the beauty and skincare industry for years.

Here, we have highlighted 5 ingredients to look out for, and how they can benefit your skin.

1. Coconut Oil

For years, women in South Asian countries have been using coconut oil to achieve a gorgeous, flowing locks and moisturized scalp. Makeup artist Bhatty credits her mom for revealing the magical secrets of coconut oi. She regularly applies a large spoonful to her hair, then combs it through, and sits in the sun for at least an hour to let it absorb. After rinsing, she now has super shiny locks.

2. Green Tea

Geishas would use green tea to keep their skin looking fresh and bright. Since green tea is rich in polyphenols, it makes sense that you would want it both in your cup and on your face.

Skincare Application:

  1. Combine 1 cup of hot green tea with 1/2 cup of ground oats, juice from 1/2 a lemon and 1 tablespoon mashed avocado.
  2. Combine the ingredients into a paste.
  3. Spread on your face and leave on for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water.

3. Oatmeal

For the Treatment of: Eczema

Colloidal oatmeal is ground oatmeal that is suspended in liquid. Oats are excellent for rebuilding your skin’s barrier, moisturising, calming inflammation, reducing itching and have been used to treat the skin for years.

The usage of oatmeal in skincare is thought to date back to the 17th century. In 1945 the first collodial oatmeal was researched, made, and shown to reduce itching and improve skin health. It was in 2003, when the FDA approved collodial oatmeal as an official skin protectant.

Skincare Application:

Oatmeal is loaded with proteins and lipids, which means it naturally holds moisture, then forms a seal over your skin’s surface. Also, it is rich in antioxidants, and helps protect against harmful free radicals.

4. Seasalt

While traveling in Japan, The Beauty Gypsy blogger learned a few tricks of the trade from geishas. Are you familiar with those stunning women with completely flawless skin?

To achieve the geisha’s perfectly smooth and firm complexions, ancient geishas would mix about 2 tablespoons sea salt and some whipped cream (real whipped cream and not the can that is full of long list of ingredients), and massage their faces while taking a bath.

5. Silver

Treatment for: Breakouts and Acne

Silver are tiny particles of silver hydrosol (silver ions) suspended in pharmaceutical grade water.

In ancient Rome, they used to store wine in silver urns to prevent spoilage, then put silver coins in milk to keep it fresh. While, in the 1930s, doctors were using silver for its anti-bacterial and purifying properties, before antibiotics were readily available.

Today, silver-infused wound dressings are still widely used by doctors for treating traumatised skin with its anti-microbial properties.

Skincare Application:

Colloidal silver fights bacteria and calms inflamed skin without stripping away the natural microbiomes of the skin. It is particularly effective in treating acne and addressing the symptoms of oxidative stress.
