Santol or (Sandoricum koetjape) is a tropical fruit that is being grown and cultivated all over Southeast Asia. This round fruit has brown to orange skin and is the size of an average apple.

Its juicy flesh contains about 3-5 seeds that are coated with juicy white tissue. Some do not pay that much attention to this fruit, not knowing that of its many health benefits.

Santol fruit is good for allergies. This is because santol fruit contains Bryonotic and Sandorinic acid. Both of these have been reported as good agents for the treatment and prevention of allergies.

Santol fruit contains lots fiber, which is is great for boosting up the probiotic bacteria that strengthen your immune system. Also, it contains quercetin which is a powerful antioxidant for boosting immunity.

3. Cancer Prevention

Santol fruit contains antioxidants that can help in preventing growth of cancer cells. In a study, rats that have mammary tumors were given extracts from whole santol fruits daily, and after some time, the size and number of the tumors were much reduced.

More recent study was able to isolate a new ring-A secotriterpene and koetjapic acid. These 2 compounds exhibited cytotoxic activity against cancer cells.

Santol fruit is good for diabetic people. It is rich in fiber and contains a low gycemic index.

Santol fruit has a natural steroidal sapogenin, which are alkaloids that help in the treatment of rashes, psoriasis, and other skin diseases, because it is a natural precursor to cortisone. Also, santol leaves can be mashed and used in the treatment of irritated skin.

How to Consume Santol Fruit:

The easiest way to eat santol fruits are by consuming the edible fresh white pulps. You can eat them just like that, you can combine in in salads like the Thai people. The pulps can also be made into syrups, jam and even liquors.

Be careful of the brown seeds though. Make sure you throw away the seeds when you are consuming the pulp. Doctors in Phillipines and Thailand always warn people not to swallow the whole seeds, as this often results in perforation and obstruction of the intestines.
