Detecting ovarian cysts is essential for treatment, but, sometimes it’s very easy to miss the symptoms. Let’s find out what they are.
Today, a large proportion of the women population is affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome. Polycystic ovaries are usually harmless, and can be of various sizes.
Cysts are small fluid-filled sacs that are usually located within or on the surface of the ovaries. Also, they are typically caused by hormonal fluctuations, and they can develop at any time during your reproductive years.
Warning Signs of Ovarian Cysts Most Women Often Ignore:
1. Abnormal Bleeding
One of the most obvious symptoms of a hormonal problem is spotting which occurs in between your normal periods. It is very common for most women to experience this occasionally, but, should not be of too much worry.
Also, if it is happening on a regular basis, or for a few period cycles, it is better to visit your gynecologist.
2. Changes in Urination
Any change in your urinary habits could be a warning sign that you have various health problems.
If you suddenly feel the urge to urinate and you cannot control it, it could be due to ovarian cysts. These symptoms, and a burning after urination indicate that your pelvic floor muscles are infected or weakened.
If the problem persists for more than a couple of days, it is better to see your doctor for early diagnosis.
3. Pain During Intercouse
Vaginal inflammation and infections are primary reasons why some women experience pain during sexual intercourse. But, if the problem becomes so persistent that it affects your normal sex life, you will need to consult a specialist.
This way, you can rule out any other possibilities, including that of an ovarian cyst.
4. Pelvic Pain
One of the most common ovarian cysot symptom is pain in the left side or lower right of the pelvis, right where the ovaries are, according to Shirazian, and it does not go away.
“You might feel it when you exercise, also you might feel it when you are sexually active, but it will be a pain in that specific place that is constant, and stays even when your menstrual cycle goes away.”
5. Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting are not just symptoms that pregnant women experience. Also, hormonal imbalances that cause ovarian cysts can trigger these symptoms in women who are not pregnant.
Most especially if you are nauseous and vomiting, it is important to see if you have any other signs that could lead you to believe if it is an ovarian cyst.
6. You Feel Full All the Time
Like with uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts can cause that feeling a heaviness in the abdomen. “A cyst is a mass, and it is occupying space, which can give you that feeling of pressure,” according to Shirazian.
You can get a somewhat same feeling with constipation, but, unless you have cysts in both ovaries, this sensation will only strike that one side of your pelvis. If your bathroom habits are fine, but you have been feeling this way for at least 2-3 weeks, it is worth finding out if an ovarian cyst might be to blame, as per Chapman-Davis, M.D., a gynecological oncologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian.
7. You Have Constant Leg or Back Pain
Leg or back pain could be associated to a ton of different things, but if your doctor has ruled everything else out, it might be worth exploring an ovarian cyst as a reason.
