This is good news for yogurt lovers! According to a new research, consuming yogurt daily can help reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack by at least 30%, on people with high blood pressure.

Scientists found out that a daily dose of ‘good bacteria‘, or probiotics present in yogurt, boosts the microbes in the gut, protecting against the effects of salty food.

Study

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine studied 18,000 men aged 40-75 and 55,000 women, whose age ranges from 30-55 who had high blood pressure, which makes people more prone to heart problems.

The women who consumed yogurt regularly were 30% less likely to suffer a heart attack, while among the men it was 19%.

In both groups, those participants consuming more than 2 yogurts a week had a 20% lower risk of stroke or coronary heart disease, over the 30-year follow-up period.

Previous studies showed that dairy foods are good for a healthy heart.

According to Dr. Justin Buendia, co-author of the latest report, “Long-term yogurt consumption might reduce your risk of cardiovascular problems”.

“Previous small studies showed beneficial effects of fermented dairy products”.

“Here we had a very large cohort of both women and women with high blood pressure, who were followed for up to 30 years.

“The results provide essential new evidence that yogurt may benefit heart health or as a consistent part of a vegetables, fibre-rich fruit, and whole grains diet.”

Dr Buendia added, “Higher yogurt consumption in combination with an overall heart-healthy diet was linked with greater reductions in cardiovascular disease risk among hypertensive women and men.”

Hypertension or high blood pressure, is known to increase the likelihood of heart conditions.

What Type of Yogurt to Eat:

Dietitian Julia Zumpano, of the Cleveland Clinic in the US, said that, “Choose either original or Greek style yogurt. “Both are excellent sources of natural probiotics, protein and calcium.

If you are managing your weight, you should try Greek yogurt, as it contains more protein, which can help you feel fuller longer.”

The best types of yogurt to eat are plain ones, that contain probiotics, which are known as “good bacteria“.

How Yogurt Helps in Reducing Stroke?

It is not just the beneficial ingredients within the yogurt which help in promoting a healthy heart, but also those who consume them tend to have a better diet anyway.

Earlier studies showed that individuals who consumed more yogurt tend to consume less refined grains and processed meat.

Also, yogurt consumers generally eat more vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, whole grains and other healthy foods, and therefore contain higher levels of vitamins B2 and B12, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc and other micronutrients.

The findings are published in the American Journal of Hypertension.
