Effective Home Remedies for Sty

A sty is an infection of an oil gland situated in the eyelid. It starts out as a blockage of the oil gland caused by dirt, makeup and other particles. It then becomes infected by bacteria, majority of the cases brought about by staphylococcus. Other causes of a sty include stress, hormonal changes and blepharitis — a condition wherein the eyelids are inflamed.

It is possible for a sty to develop on the outer as well as inner region of the eyelid. A sty that is near the surface usually develops pus. Basically, the problem tends to go away on its own within a week or two. However, there are a few remedies which may be done at home to shorten the duration of a sty. Many of them also help provide relief from the discomfort and pain which are common symptoms. Some of the best home remedies for a sty are as follows:

1. Warm Compress

Applying heat to the sty helps speed up the rupture and drainage of pus. That’s because this home remedy helps increase blood circulation to the area, thus accelerating the healing process. Simply dip a small piece of cloth in warm water and wring out the excess. Fold neatly and place on the affected eyelid. Let it stay there for about 5 minutes or until it is no longer warm. Try doing this 3 to 4 times daily until the pus ruptures.

2. Green Tea

Placing green tea on the sty is just like doing the warm compress suggested above. The only difference is green tea helps in further reducing the swelling and pain because it has anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, tannins in green tea prevent further infection. All you have to do is dunk green tea in warm water. Squeeze out excess water and place on the style for about 5 minutes. Repeat this several times daily until the pus is completely drained.

3. Turmeric

One of the best anti-inflammatory spices on the planet is turmeric. That is why using it to wash the affected eyelid with can help cure a sty in no time. In a small saucepan, boil a couple of cups of water with a tablespoon of turmeric in it. Allow to cool to room temperature once reduced in half. Strain with a cheesecloth and use the liquid to disinfect the eyelids. You may also consume foods with lots of turmeric in them for faster healing from within.

4. Aloe Vera Gel

If you have a small garden and you have aloe vera in it, then you have one of the best home remedies for a sty. All you have to do is break open a leaf and daub the gel within on the sty itself. Thoroughly rinse with water after about 20 minutes. This sticky liquid is capable of killing off bacteria, thus helping to prevent further infection. The gel of the aloe vera also helps reduce inflammation and promotes healing.

5. Guava Leaves

Traditional healers use guava leaves in disinfecting wounds and preventing infections. You may also use guava leaves to promote the faster healing of a sty. You simply have to get your hands on a guava leaf and wash it thoroughly. Place it in a piece of cloth dipped in hot water. Allow the cloth to cool down a bit. Place the towel on the affected eyelid with the guava leaf still in it. Do this effective home remedy for a couple of times daily for several days.
