Study: Unsalted Tomato Juice May Help in Lowering Heart Disease Risk

Researchers have reported that drinking unsalted tomato juice can help in lowering cholesterol level and blood pressure in adults who are at risk of cardiovascular disease, as per a study.

Study:

The study was published in the journal of Food Science and Nutrition, and the researchers from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan examined approximately 500 residents, 297 females and 184 males.

It was reported that blood pressure in 94 study participants with untreated hypertension or pre-hypertension dropped significantly.

Systolic blood pressure dropped from an average of 141.2 to 137 mmHg, while diastolic blood pressure lowered from an average of 83.3 to 80.9 mmHg.

While the high LDL (or bad) cholesterol levels in 125 study participants decreased from an average of 155 to 149.9 mg/dL, according to the study.

According to researchers, these beneficial effects were the same among women, men, and also for different age groups.

To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the effects of tomato product ot tomato intake on cardiovascular disease risk markers over the course of 1 year and over a wide age range,” as stated by the authors.
